Copying the Classics: Among the Farmyard People – ZB 1-A

Copying the Classics is a series of copywork books focused on building Christian character.  Available in a wide range of font styles and three progressive levels, each copywork book draws from literature excerpts and corresponding passages of scripture (KJV) to develop a strong spiritual foundation while practicing printing and handwriting skills.

Among the Farmyard People by Clara Dillingham Pierson (1899) provides the text for the literature-based selections.  Young readers are introduced to farm-life and natural science while reading character-building stories and examples.

Level 1 features line spacing of 5/8”,  a traditional-style Zaner Bloser manuscript font, and is appropriate for beginners who have learned to form their letters (mastery is not required), and are working with larger letters. One sentence is generally presented per lesson.

21 lessons are included, one introductory and one closing drawn from scripture (KJV), and one excerpt from each chapter of Among the Farmyard People, chosen to reinforce the character lessons of the stories .

Quick reference charts with numbers and arrows are provided for upper case, lower case, and numerals for children to use as they work on their lessons.  Decorative illustrations are included and may be colored if desired.  Space for free-form drawings is also provided to encourage creativity, they appear as empty ‘frames’ throughout the book.  Blank template pages for additional writing and drawing space are provided in the appendix.

This copywork book is most effective when accompanied by a family reading of the educational and delightful Among the Farmyard People.  The delightful prose naturally integrates character and science instruction, making this title an ideal choice for the elementary grades.  The entire family will be charmed by this work when shared as a family read-aloud.
