An Oldie, But a Goodie

egyptian scribeIf you’ve never heard of copywork (the practice of copying respected works of literature in your own hand) before, it might sound like some kind of new-fangled practice, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!  Copywork was being practiced in Old Testament times by the Israelites (the kings in particular) and in Ancient Egypt as a vital part of the training of Egyptian scribes.

Our family recently watched a documentary series on DVD entitled Ancient Lives, which followed the daily lives of the tomb-makers that resided near the Valley of the Kings.  Fascinating viewing, but one of the things it really drove home for me was the use of copywork in the training of scribes.  To be a scribe in Ancient Egypt was to have a fairly good social standing.  Most Egyptians were illiterate, so scribes were employed to write letters, decorate tombs, copy religions and legal texts, and so on.

During a scribe’s training he would copy religious documents, legal texts, satirical works, and literature that was considered ‘classic’ at the time.  He would copy these works again and again and again over the course of his intensive four-year training period before being declared a scribe. Thankfully, we have a much larger array of literature to draw our copywork selections from than the Egyptians did!

Yes, copywork does have a long and illustrious history, proving that the method works!  The hieroglyphics found in the pyramids and tombs of the Ancient Egyptians were written by the hands of those trained in their art through copywork.  Just imagine the fruit that Christian copywork, faithfully practiced can bear in your own children!   Let’s dedicate that fruit to the Lord and let the work of our hands in printing and handwriting be used to glorify His name.

Why Not Make Your Own?

When our family started Bogart Family Resources, part of our vision was to help busy homeschooling moms pull out ready-to-go resources that both taught skills and helped develop Christian character in their children. We need to teach our children to print, and to write, but sometimes we’re just too busy to find copywork selections, hop onto the computer and put in the time for the prep work that comes with printing your own copywork.

As someone who makes copywork both for her own child, and for others, I can tell you – it takes time! But sometimes we do have the time we need to put together copywork selections especially designed for our own children. Their own words put on the page, favorite literature selections, or timeless poetry that they’ve come to love, there’s no end to the inspirational ideas available (I don’t think I’ll EVER be finished all of my copywork ideas.)

When you do need something customized just for your child, or have the time to prepare all of his or her copywork lessons from scratch, StartWrite software is the solution that homeschooling parents have turned to time and time again for their needs.  If you use Zaner Bloser, D’Nealian, or Getty Dubay Italic in manuscript or cursive, StartWrite will most likely meet your needs if you have the time to invest in worksheet creation.  It’s available both for PC’s and Mac’s and is available at a good price.  Based on easy-to-use word processing software tools, it’s easy to learn how to make your own copywork worksheets.

On the other hand, if you find yourself harried and just plumb out of copywork ideas (or use a font that StartWrite doesn’t include), we hope to help you with easy, ready-to-go copywork resources as we expand our line of offerings.

Remember, if you need something you don’t see here, just let us know, and we’ll get busy!
